The Institute of Neuropathology is offering a

PhD candidate (f/m/d) Doctoral thesis on “Schwann cell adaptation in peripheral nerve repair”

Operational area: Institute of Neuropathology -Experimental neuropathology-

Working hours: Part-Time 65% (25,03 hours/week)

Duration/Term of employment: the position is limited for 3 years in accordance with the WissZeitVG (German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act) with the option of prolongation. The successful applicant will be encouraged and supported to achieve a doctoral degree.
Start date: as soon as possible
Remuneration/Rates: EG 13 (TV-L)

Tasks:

The aim is to carry out a doctoral project on the topic of “Schwann cell adaptation in peripheral nerve repair” in the zebrafish model using microscopic, transgenic, molecular biological, and pharmacological methods.

  • Planning, conducting, and evaluating experiments using the zebrafish model
  • Presentation of research results and writing of manuscripts
  • Cloning of plasmids and microinjections for the production of transgenic zebrafish lines
  • Confocal microscopy and laser-induced nerve lesions in zebrafish to study regeneration and Schwann cell changes during regeneration
  • Pharmacological modulation in the zebrafish model
  • Care, monitoring, feeding, and genotyping of zebrafish

Profile:

  • Completed bachelor's and master's thesis in biology or comparable fields
  • Practical experience in the use of molecular biology methods
  • Very good theoretical knowledge of molecular biology methods
  • Experience in developing scientific hypotheses/questions and writing scientific texts
  • Independent scientific work under supervision
  • Very good English skills (Level C1)
  • Desirable:
    • Experience with and qualification to perform animal experiments, if possible
    • Confident use of common software tools
    • Experience in image processing of microscopic images
    • Very good knowledge of statistics
  • Analytical thinking skills and high motivation to perform
  • Ability to work in a team, reliability and flexibility
  • Organizational skills and manual dexterity
  • Independence and initiative
